For this second writing exercise, we will be moving from the world of intellectual history (i.e., the ideas of Hobbes and Locke) into the world of work, when people began to leave the land for another kind of work. We will look in detail at the consequences of this "industrial revolution," but for now can begin by reading and writing about its beginnings with this three part essay. Your due date is sometime before the 2nd of March.
- What caused the industrial revolution of the 18th century, i.e. before 1800?
- What were some of the technological innovations and why were they important?
- Why did Great Britain take the lead in the industrial revolution?
Some sites to visit:
- An Industrial Revolution page by two high school students
- Fourth grade New Jersey WWW pages, one of which is on the Industrial Revolution (these kids are right behind you!)
- A good IR page with excellent links on the early period
